As I negleted this blog for a year I have not uploaded images of projects I completed in that time. Here are just a few more photos of things I made in the past. I did a lot of knitting, and found it hard to be creative out of class time, sometimes as a creative person this happens. I've had moments where I felt no passion and felt my creativeness was gone forever, leaving me in a dark sad place. But then it would return with gusto and I wouldn't be able to stop let alone sleep or concerntrate on anything that needed to be done. Such is the life of a creative person and I predict there will be a few more ups and downs regarding my creative ventures in the future, lets hope that gusto always finds its way back.

Patterns

Over the duration of studying textiles, I've looked at a LOT of patterns. I've noticed I usually like 2 colour patterns, very geometric, and it's been hard to branch off and do multicolour patterns and designs. The one above is my Dala Horse design for a Hankies project and I was very happy with it, it printed well and is very geometric. I'd like to print this again in the future, perhaps dulling the colours to a tone more suitable to my new palate. Perhaps even a greyscale would be nice. The pattern below is a repeat of illustrations I did, the vintage clothing was from a fantastic book from my library that I copied, manipulated and finished the illustrations to have animals wearing the clothes, I think I'd like to print some more of this and use it as lining fabric in the future. Its interesting, but not over the top and is a very one way directional design. After my work experience doing multi directional designs I've noticed I tend to always apply direction to my design somehow, giving it purpose as I normally design for a specific product or application. I've grown to love repeats, I hope to do more in the near future, as I have many projects in mind for them.

I've been working on 4 design ranges for Uni assignments and I'm really loving the themes I've come up with. I thought I'd share a few of the designs to give you a feel for what I've been working on. You can see trends in colours and themes and an overall feel in my work this year. I like this direction. I feel it sums up all the sorts of images I've been collecting for the last year and more. I've been working on print repeats and knit repeats and even experiemental repeats that i could possibly turn into weaves or other things. We'll see where this semester of production takes them.

Hello there, I've missed you!

So I haven't blogged in a while but I have been a busy girl, Reading blogs, experimenting with making things and living life.

In the time since my last post I graduated, started another year of study, built a house with my family, moved from one end to the other then did all that again, started painting a birch tree feature wall, made light fixtures, started a new job, and found some skeletons (real ones, not ones in the closet). I mentioned I experimented with making things, yes I've done a lot of that, from casting and molding to natural dyeing and crochet. I never stop loving that passion of learning something new.

My next project is machine knitting, i just dug out my Oma's knitting machine from her house and while still in the process of setting up my very own studio I will attempt to learn how to use it, wish me luck!

I recently knit this collared neck warmer, before we had a run of 40+ degree days, of course; On flickr a lovely girl from the UK, called Fi liked it and has now bought it! yay :)

so what do you think? if you're in Australia suffering a VERY hot summer, pretend its made from ice, because the thought of wearing a soft and really warm neck warmer right now might make me eat another icy pole.

Okay time to sit in the colder room now, hope you're all staying cool.

I had great luck thrift/op shopping today!

I scored some bargains, such as a pair of Orbit shoes, black leather, my size, and ONLY $10 I'd admired these in stores but couldn't afford them, They're really comfy I can't wait for an opportunity to wear them out.

I also got a beautiful smock dress for $7 in a bright watermelon/orange colour. very summery.

A linen shirt with a nice cut, for $5 and another old leather belt for $1

Before I went looking for treasures I stopped in at my local library and managed to track down a movie I've been dying to see. Grey Gardens, It's a documentary about Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' cousin and aunt who lived in Grey Gardens and were pretty much a couple of the most eccentric women I've ever seen.

Tomorrow morning, I'm going to sit down with my knitting, and watch it, every last second, and then probably watch it again, lol.

I uploaded a bunch of new pics to my flickr, I'm doing well with the blogging and flickr-ing schedule for January I do spend A LOT of time on Ravelry though, so addictive!

making making and creating

I've been VERY productive this holidays and thought it was about time I shared some of my creations!

I've been sewing clothing for myself/and others, cushions, screen printing, knitting, and everything in between.

p.s. If you don't have a work bench and need to cut bits of wood, I've discovered that sitting on the grass with a miter guide and a saw works so much better than any table I've been trying to use and not cut into. TRY IT!

I uploaded a BUNCH of photos onto my Flickr page this afternoon, also cooked veggie soup and baked pumpkin scones, I have been productive see! So check them out.

I also updated my Ravelry page ( my user name is birdprint) , which now has more of my finished and WIP projects up there, including the ever popular Marimekko Unikko mitts ( check my flickr page for my marimekko mug!!!)

Right now I'm working on some more blackboard designs, since I think I've found a niche and something that is actually tricky to work with.

I look forward to a cup of lady Grey and some knitting later on. Hope you are all well.

I've been making some more patterns for whatever really. Just experimenting with different formulas and techniques or design elements.

This one was designed based on a photo I took of my budgie and I'm really happy with it.

I love Line work in design, I'd much rather see a heavily lined design than some sparkly ritzy thing.

I've been painting a lot this week, mainly for Christmas presents for friends and family, last night I finished off 2 abstract portrait paintings, 20X25 cm I'm really happy with them, I forget how much I love painting, and how much I zone out from everything else. It's probably a good thing I'm not a fine arts student or I'd never leave my house or talk to anyone. Also I wen to the Melb Design Market and saw Lara making a sale! I can't wait for the next design market, it's such an inspiration to go see these local makers doing exactly what I want to achieve for myself.
Some good DVD'S for xmas...

- Rudolph (how can anyone resist a velvety animated rudoplh movie!!!) - Hogfather by Terry Pratchet ( As crazy as it would be in real, I'd really like Susan's hair do with the white and a streak of black)
Some good Music for xmas...

- Sufjan Stevens xmas album set of 5 disks (the booklet is almost the best part, the essay he wrote about why he got to hate christmas for so long, without giving too much away it involves a burnt spatula and tube socks, well worth a read!) - the OC mix 3- christmas album- with bands like 'Low' 'Eels' and more you're in for a good christmas sing along.

Cake...
Cake has been a topic of conversation between my uni friends and myself pretty much for the last 3 months. Erin loves cake, more than life itself, so I kept myself busy and baked a few cakes recently for parties and whatnot. Above is a photo of a brownie I made.

I'm officially on holidays, thank goodness. I was starting to go a bit nutty. And not to mention neglecting my Blog and Flickr and the pile of things I've yet to make.

My friend Ben and I have decided that our goal for next year is to learn the ukulele, So while he's one step ahead and actually owns one, I've started listening to Jake Shimabukuro on my itunes every day and watching you tube tutorials and taking notes. (thank god for coloured sharpies)

I've started making xmas presents and doing a bit of screen printing in my backyard studio but no photos yet.

Just wanted to post that I'm not dead, or left the country, I've just been slack and now I finally have time to dedicate to the funner stuff in life, like blogging and baking!

Hello peeps!

I'm sorry I've been very slack with the blog, I've been sick sick sick for the last 8 days!

I study Screen Print Design, and one component of that is a Photography Class, these are the results of a Model shoot assignment I finished with the Aid of my beautiful and photo shoot experienced friend. I'm very happy with the result of these Images, I hope my teacher likes them also. What do you think?

I think the first one is the best photo I've taken all year.

Cameo + bag

Hey there! Here are some things I've been doing in the last few days. I finished printing an assignment for textiles and I'm really happy how the cameo's turned out. We had to do 2 different colour ways as a placement print I've chosen tea towels, I also discovered a different way to do my registration which I understand much better than how I'd been shown in the past.

The bag I made from Vintage fabric that I just adore. The panels are hand cut leather for decoration, the strap is adjustable for shoulder or across the body, there is a reinforced pocket inside, there are 2 side pockets and a button closure could easily be applied.

This is a sneak peak to my prototyping, I've been working on some purses with a similar leather panel design and will post some photos soon.

1. I dislike eating with metal spoons, I have a collection of plastic spoons gathered throughout my adventures.

3. There are 11 people in my current course at RMIT, 4 of us have very close birthdays in May. One on the 15th, 16th, i'm the 18th, and one on the 19th.
4. I used to have a serious phobia of sloths (I would scream if i saw one on TV), but have recently worked on getting over it. Not an easy task.
5. I've had a female dominated life so far and don't find it ironic that I'd like to have 3 sons in the future (and picked out their names, Jack, Maison, Caleb)
6. One of my favorite 'junior novels' was 'Jasmine' about a girl who lived with her Dad, probably because it was the opposite of my own life, except we both had a thing for fairy shops and beach combing.

Melbourne Design Market

On Sunday I ventured into the city again and attended the Melbourne Design Market. Apart from being so packed into a car park it was a great and exciting Market filled with interesting and somewhat Handmade objects and fashions.

Another perk was bumping into a dozen lovely friends and meeting new ones. While visiting Lara Cameron ( of Kirin notebook) I was lucky to briefly meet Bianca ( of Hollabee) at the Bamakko stall. Lara and I finalised our long awaited swaps, I received a large batch of her amazing printed fabric and I hope she finds a spot on her shelves for the little felt giraffe I made for her. It was a pleasure swapping with you Lara!

I also got to bump into the lovely Pip ( of Meet Me at Mikes) who was busily handing out flyers.

It was a great event, one that i'll attend next year again. If you'd like to see photos I have put quite a few up from the day onto my flickr account

I spent a lovely day with Mum the other week looking at our most favorite Antique shed. It's on the Mornington Peninsula and it's choc-a-block full of old and wonderful things for very reasonable prices. I think I like it the best of all the Antique stores/sheds in Melbourne because it still allows me to rummage through stashes of items covered in dust and find that special treasure. I think I got the tin for $8, I'll keep some lovely crafty stuff inside I think.

I finally joined Ravelry
I've put up 2 projects i've completed which are the photos above, The octopus mittens and the marimekko, unikko inspired mitts. you can find me here

I've been knitting socks today, doing both at the same time, so they match, it's a lovely yarn to use, a wool, acryllic and linen blend. I'd prefer no acrylic in it but for $2- 200g i'm not complaining.

Craft night last night was fun, we ate baked goods and made felt robots. I managed to make Nicole enjoy sewing after a rough start. I'll post some photos soon.

I'm currently enjoying my holidays, knitting, listening to music, thinking about projects I can do while i actually have time on my hands. I hope you're having a nice week too.

yarn and puppies

what more could I ask for in life? i LOVE yarn, i LOVE puppies, so today i had a pretty epic day!

i rolled around with 8 puppies all fat and lovely and warm. And am knitting my first sock :D

I have a heap of folio work due for uni, and a 2m pattern repeat to set on screen and print on Wednesday! eeep. I'll be sure to take some photos of the stuff I've been working on lately. It feels like there's not enough hours in the day most weeks. I look forward to the holidays, big time!

Foil and puff paint screen printing

This assignment for textile printing has allowed me to use foil and puff paint printing! It was so rewarding to do the foil, it's a peacock silhouette that has been printed twice, mirrored and i'm VERY happy with the result. The puff paint worked wonderfully, the trick is to apply it thinly but not too thin.

These are for a swatch book that will have 15 final designs, all of which carry my theme : birds.

I'll show you more pictures of the swatches I'm sewing/embroidering at the moment. But for now it's time to eat some breakfast and go collecting today. I'm doing an oral presentation on natural dyes for my colour class soon, and i plan to do some more spinning too! Who would have thought you could dye fibres with grass or autumn leaves! we'll see how that goes! fingers crossed.

birthday sillyness

So I am 21 years old today, I had an excellent birthday and party last night. I had a costume party, the theme was to come as something starting with the letter "c".

I was a cactus.

This is the newest creation from my imagination. He's for sale, not sure if I'll put him in a shop yet, or just see who wants him first. I went to spotlight and bought a tonne of animal eyes today, i really need to make more plushies, I love them so.

I made a heap of new broaches today too, the "LOVE YOU" one he's holding above. They're for sale too, and they come in different wood colours, I'm giving one to my screen print teacher Lucy, who stopped to ask me about mine one day and she's lovely, and said I can expose my own screens in class, yippee!

I'm back at Uni this week after holidays, and we did some great patterning yesterday, I will show you photos when i get my work back. We're also about to start painting possibly the most complicated colour wheel I've ever seen, meh, I'm already tired thinking about it!

So i've had a busy and productive easter weekend.

We found a lost dog at the beach and looked after it until the owner arrived tonight, poor "mojo" was so scared he pretty much sat on my legs shivering. I have done my good deeds for the week.

friday was making felt finger puppets and playing with a 3 year old with an infectious giggle.

saturday was Ben's bbq and later Shaun and i drove to Arthur's seat, then watched the godfather.

Sunday was sewing this shirt and listening to pink floyd records at my oma's house.

I'm going to the Aquarium tomorrow, maybe i'll get all inspired and make something sea creature related. Maybe a Narwhal, oh how I love Narwhals....

Here's some of the class work I did this week, colour wheels and textures.

The woodgrain textures have since been cut into a motif of an apple for a pattern repeat assignment we'll be printing onto textiles after easter. It should look really good :)
